Undergraduate Degrees

B.Ed. Secondary (Language Education: English Option)(A)

Introduction

The programme uses the Blended Learning Approach which is an ideal way for in-service teachers to make use of training opportunities to improve the quality of teaching and learning at the secondary schools. Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with majors in:
  • Language Education (English)
  • History Education
  • Language Education (Spanish)
  • Science Education (Chemistry)
  • Mathematics Education
  • Computer Science/Information Technology Education

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally have ONE of the following:
  • At least two CAPE or A Level subjects, one in the subject to be taught (persons without Teacher Diploma)
  • A three-year trained Teachers’ College Diploma in relevant interest area
  • For Science Education: Chemistry - either Science Double Option Teachers’ Diploma or A level/ CAPE Chemistry.
  • Compulsory for all students– English Language CXC (CSEC) or GCE O Level

Programme Cost

The programme will cost US$2,500.00 per year inclusive of summer. There will be an additional laboratory cost to Chemistry and Spanish applicants.

INTERNET ACCESS: This is an on-line programme and personal access to the internet is a requirement.

Prerequisites

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST (ELPT)

All applicants who have not achieved a Grade 1 in English (English A) in CXC (CSEC), a Grade A in GCE O level English Language, A Grade 1 & 2 in CAPE Communication Studies or a Grade A in GCE General Paper, are required to take the English Language Proficiency Test.

For applicants from Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean test registration form and an application fee of J$1,500/EC$60 should be submitted with the application for entry to the University. Please check the web site for details on dates for the ELPT in your country.


Programme Structure

This programme of study shall consist of a minimum of 66 credits and includes:
  • Foundations of Education and aspects of Educational Theory
  • University Foundation courses
  • Courses in Subject Teaching or such other specializations as the Department may prescribe
  • A written report in the area of the professional specialization

Course of Study

DURATION: All programmes will start in September 2007 and normally run for 6 semesters and 3 summers for persons with a Teacher Diploma.

Internship

A written report in the area of the professional specialization.

  • Application forms are available online www.dec.uwi.edu/admission; or from Resident Tutors at the University Centres [outside Jamaica]; from the Admissions office at Mona and UWIDEC Sites offices across the island.
  • Applicants are required to pay an application processing fee of JA$450.00/EC$25.00 with the completed application form. The following original documents MUST be submitted with the application:
    -Birth Certificate, Academic Certificates/Grade Slips (accepted only in cases where the certificates are not yet available), Professional Certificates/Diplomas [transcripts must be requested], Marriage Certificate/Deed Poll (whichever is applicable) if present name is different from that on documents.
