B.Ed. Primary (Language Arts Option)
Introduction
The School of Education, UWI, St. Augustine in association with the Distance Education Centre will be offering on-line the Bachelor of Education: Primary (Language Arts) degree. Programme delivery will combine print or CD- based self-instructional materials with on-line tutoring. A limited number of audio-conferences will also be held. The programme has the same admission requirements as stated in the entry requirements and similarly targets practitioners in the field of education.Rationale
This programme targets practitioners in the field of education. It is designed
to explore with practitioners, the many facets of the teaching of Language Arts
to children.
It aims to help practitioners:
i) develop the knowledge and skills required to understand the pedagogical
challenges associated with teaching English as a second language, and
ii) design, develop and implement appropriate and effective programmes based
on best practice.
Entry Requirements
Successful applicants are required to satisfy the basic University matriculation requirements and must hold a Teacher's Diploma from a recognized Teachers' College.Programme Requirements
In order to ensure successful study, successful applicants will be required to participate in three short courses to gain familiarity with on-line processes and activities. These courses are as follows:1. Orientation to Online Learning: This is a hands-on training session to assist you in becoming familiar with Moodle, which is the learning management system (LMS) that UWIDEC uses for online teaching and learning. The session is conducted by the technician at the local UWIDEC site, and will be held on days and times arranged locally during the week, June 9-13, 2008.
2. Improving your reading skills: This is a 5-week, fully-tutored online course that is intended to assist you in enhancing your reading skills. The course is aimed at helping you strengthen the reading skills you would have acquired at an earlier age and build the interpretive and analytical skills required for study at the higher education level. It will also provide you with the opportunity to become comfortable in the online environment prior to beginning your programme of study. Improving your reading skills is scheduled for the period June 16 – July 21, 2008.
3. Improving your Study Skills: This 2-week online course is aimed at helping you improve your ability to manage your learning. It consists of two parts. The first part will provide you with the opportunity to find out about your specific learning styles. In the second part, we seek to assist you to strengthen your time management skills. This course will be fully self-instructional, but you may request tutor assistance if you require. Improving your study skills is scheduled for the period June 30 – July 14, 2008.
Access to Computers
All students will be required to have access to a computer with Internet connectivity
in order to participate in this programme. Students who are unable to ensure
their own access, may use the facilities provided at the local UWIDEC site.
Prerequisites
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST (ELPT)All applicants who have not achieved a Grade 1 in English (English A) in CXC (CSEC), a Grade A in GCE O level English Language, A Grade 1 & 2 in CAPE Communication Studies or a Grade A in GCE General Paper, are required to take the English Language Proficiency Test. The test registration form and an application fee of J$1,500/EC$60 should be submitted with the application for entry to the University. The test date will be posted on the web site shortly.
Programme Structure
- The programme consists of a mix of compulsory core courses and professional courses worth a total of 90 credits.
- Students taking this primarily distance-delivered programme will normally pursue 9-12 credits by distance during a semester.
- During the long vacation period from July to mid- August, courses may be offered face-to-face at the St. Augustine campus.

The fee structure for this programme will be the same as the one that currently applies for other distance programmes.
All students of the University of the West Indies are required to obtain a minimum of 9 credits in the University’s Foundation Courses to qualify for their degree. All Foundation courses are Level 1 courses coded “FOUN” above. Students are free to do them at any time during their period of study. They are offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2.
