B.Ed. in Literacy Studies
Introduction
The literacy programme prepares participants to:- Develop knowledge and expertise in literacy learning and instruction.
- Understand how to organize and apply their knowledge to work with students in a creole-speaking environment.
- Develop the knowledge, attitudes and willingness to engage in ongoing professional development to support literacy programmes.
- Engage in self-reflection and assessment to enhance their roles in literacy development.
Entry Requirements
Successful applicants are required to satisfy the basic University matriculation requirements and must hold a Teacher’s Diploma from a recognized Teachers’ College.Programme Requirements

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST (ELPT)
All applicants who have not achieved a Grade 1 in English (English A) in CXC (CSEC), a Grade A in GCE O level English Language, A Grade 1 & 2 in CAPE Communication Studies or a Grade A in GCE General Paper, are required to take the English Language Proficiency Test.
For applicants from Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean test registration form and an application fee of J$1,500/EC$60 should be submitted with the application for entry to the University. Please check the web site for details on dates for the ELPT in your country.
Programme Structure
A degree in literacy studies will require the completion of at least 66 credit hours of study beyond initial teacher training. It is envisaged that the programme will be part time over four semesters and three summers. Normally, the minimum number of credits to be taken per semester is six and the maximum, nine.Core Education Courses (12 credits)
