Summer School Programme 2008

Overview

The University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre will be offering a select number of undergraduate courses during the summer period. The programme is expected to offer students an opportunity to:

  • complete their programme of study
  • accelerate their studies
  • re-sit courses in order to meet pre-requisites for the regular semester course offerings
  • enhance personal development

The Summer School Programme will be held during the period June 2 -July 31, 2008. Credits for courses passed will be granted to registered students of the University of the West Indies. Students who register in the Summer School Programme are subject to all faculty and university regulations.

The Summer Semester Programme is optional. It is not to be confused with the mandatory Vacation Student Support Programme (non-credit courses).

Registration Process

The following categories of students are eligible for admission to the summer school:

  1. Registered students of the University who have not completed the requirements of the degree, diploma or certificate programme for which they are registered.

    Students outside the Distance Education Centre will be required to consult their respective faculties for approval before registering for a course. A letter of approval from the Dean of the faculty (or his/her designate) should be submitted to the Asst. Registrar, Admissions Section via the Site Coordinator no later than May 30, 2008. You will required to complete a Quick Admit Form. This form should be submitted to the local UWIDEC site.

  2. Students of the University who have been granted leave of absence for Semester I and/or Semester II or part thereof preceding the Summer School. Students on leave of absence for an entire academic year are not eligible for admission to summer school courses.

  3. Other persons, not students of the University, who are eligible to matriculate at either the normal or lower level. (These students must register in the Summer School Programme and also with the Admissions Section of the University as Special Admission students) Special Admission students are required to complete a Quick Admit Form. This form should be submitted to the local UWIDEC site.

  • Read instructions provided and be guided accordingly.

Course Selection and Course Load

  • Students are strongly advised to take only two courses during the summer semester, but can take up to three courses (including Exams Only). Academic Board Approval is required to sit Exams Only.

  • ALL faculty bulletins, information guide, timetable and registration materials for summer school will be available online. Students are advised to check the website regularly for updates.

  • Course selection will be carried out via the Internet at the Web site http://my.dec.uwi.edu Students are required to select courses on-line before making payments.

Modifications to registration

  • Students may modify their registration during the Add/Drop period June 2, - June 8, 2008.

  • Changes to registration after June 8, require Academic Board Approval. Any request made beyond this date will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances.

Course Fees

The cost per course varies according to programme. The fee for the course offerings from the B.Sc. Programme is US$215 per 3-credit course. This year, there will be a small increase to the Jamaican students, due to movement of the local JMD against the USD. As such the Jamaican students will pay J$15,275 per 3- credit course. The cost for Gender Studies course offerings is US$180 per 3-credit course. Please contact the Site Coordinator in your respective territories for further details regarding course fees and payment method. All fees should be paid by May 30, 2008. A late fee will be charged if payment is done after this date. Students should provide their Site Coordinators with a copy of their proof of payment.

Refund Policy

Registration fees will be refunded in full if a student notifies the Asst. Registrar in writing prior to the start of teaching.

A penalty shall be instituted as follows:

  • 25% of fees will be deducted up to the end of the first week of teaching;
  • 30% of fees will be deducted up to the end of the second week of teaching.

Students who withdraw from a course or courses after two weeks of teaching will not be refunded any portion of the tuition fees.

Withdrawal

Students may withdraw from a course or courses by notifying the Asst. Registrar, Admissions Section via the Site Coordinator no later than the end of the second week of summer school (Friday, June 13, 2008). Thereafter, students will only be allowed to adjust their records in exceptional circumstances via an application to the Academic Board.

Academic Integrity

Students have the responsibility to know and observe the regulations of their faculty and the University of the West Indies. Additionally, the regulations prohibit plagiarism, falsification of information and academic dishonesty. All regulations are in force during the Summer School Programme.

Delivery Method

The blended learning delivery method will be used primarily in the summer semester. This consists of a variety of distance education methodologies: self-study print-based instructional materials supported by interactive audiographic teleconferences, limited face-to-face tutorial sessions where necessary and a web-based Learning Management System that will engage students in any of the following activities:

    • participate in online discussion forums

    • practice exercises also known as self-assessment exercises SAE's)

    • multiple-choice tests (MCQs)

    • limited research activities using links to other web sites

    • other activities that the course coordinator may decide on

In all of the above online activities, you will be monitored by e-tutors. Students from across the region will be placed into online groups and each group will be assigned an e-tutor.

Students are encouraged to select your courses and pay your tuition as soon as possible. Once you have registered, you should collect your print-based course materials from your Site Coordinator and start to read ahead. Be reminded, you need to select your courses in a timely fashion, in order to be assigned to a tutorial group. This is a short semester. Therefore, you are expected to participate in all the learning activities provided by your Course Coordinators and Tutors in order to guarantee yourselves a successful summer semester.

Attendance

A MINIMUM ATTENDANCE OF 75% of teleconference /tutorial sessions is required. Participation is compulsory in the online environment.

Cancellation of Courses

If enrollment for a particular course is insufficient, it may be cancelled. If a course is cancelled students will have the option of selecting an alternate course or taking a tuition refund.
